Flowers by Aaron Comeau
Leaning into the essential mysteries of life, beginning each time anew with no notions, Comeau cultivates his piano improvisation practice. These five offerings confront the failure of language in contemporary society and challenge the status quo of reproducibility & quantification, presenting ideas that bloom in their own time.
A follow-up to 2020's FOLIAGE, shot at the old United Contemporary gallery location during an exhibition by painter, printmaker, and longtime collaborator Stefan Berg, FLOWERS shows Aaron improvising at his new studio at 401 Richmond, a space he shares with Berg and UC founder Burke Paterson. The videos shot by Camille Neirynck-Guerrero are an indispensable companion to the music, utilizing tight angles and physical camera filters that illuminate the rhythm of Aaron's movements; a silent accompaniment accentuating the act of creation.
