"He sits alone in the dark and is thankful. He is thankful that the icicles came and froze the birds away and then receded. The machines are still out there but now they have nobody to plot with. They will have no choice but to function until a new species evolves that can communicate with them. He certainly cannot. He never made it to work. He would have called in if he hadn’t been disconnected; then the icicles came and froze the birds away. There probably wouldn’t be any point in calling in now. He’s actually not sure if the sun ever came up, but it probably did several times. He is no longer sure how many times constitutes several. More than a few. Less than infinity. He looks over at the sink. He wonders if he should put his contacts in or take them out. He put one in some time ago. It wasn’t easy to do in the dark and he froze. It was a warm freeze like they all are now. The kind of freeze that you can come out of without having to melt first. He came out the freeze and had one contact in. Aware of the destructive lack of symmetry he was faced with a decision. Decisions tended to make him freeze. But it was too warm to freeze for long now so he would eventually be forced to decide. Put one on, or take one off? The sink beckoned like a giant pool of milk. It had been a long time since he had gone to the store and he was undoubtedly out of milk. So the sink was a spiritual milk mirage, calling him over to make his decision. He imagined the machines laughing outside. In reality they probably didn’t care. The question was did he care, wasn’t it? Did he want to see what was out there on this after Ice Age midmorning afternoon? Did he want to see at all? Half of him did. Obviously. He wished he could remember left from right, but he at least knew which eye was empty. It wouldn’t be hard to put it in. To fill that void with vision. And of course it wouldn’t be hard either, to take the other out. But something about this now was different. He had that to go on, or at least to hitch a ride with. Maybe it was the lack of birds and icicles. Maybe it was knowing that there was no work to go to, no store to go to, no water in the sink. Just contacts. And a thumbnail full of solution."
