Above Ground by The Cobb, Maudlin

Presenting his first release of the year, The Cobb returns to -102C with a new single entitled ‘Above Ground’. 2021 proved to be a breakout year for the Russian artist, as he continued to showcase a blend of organic and progressive house across his home labels of Deepwibe Underground and -102C. Perhaps most impressive was his ‘Elements’ anthology in conjunction with progressive music star Dmitry Molosh. The four release series went down as one of the years most ambitious projects and also gave us a look into a different side of Dmitry. Now continuing on an upwards trajectory, The Cobb presents his first single of year, alongside a remix from Maudlin, which is in fact a new organic music alias for Dmitry Molosh.

One thing The Cobb has gotten so good at since leaning in an organic direction is building atmosphere in his tracks. ‘Above Ground’ is an excellent example with it’s wispy textures evolving throughout, creating a very inviting yet surreal sonic environment. Heartfelt melodies only add to this incredible vibe, converging as the main break draws closer, nicely juxtaposed with colourful harmonics and ultimately making for a heavenly finale.

For those of you who follow Dmitry Molosh closely you know he tried his hand at some organic house productions last year and with great success. His four remixes as part of The Cobb’s Elements series all translated well into that burgeoning genre, so much so in fact that’s he created a new alias to explore these sounds, and avoid confusion with the progressive minded productions which he’s become so loved for, and with that Maudlin is born. Here presenting his first production under the new alias, he takes ‘Above Ground’ and works some organic minded magic on it. The rich texture of the original gets stripped away somewhat here in favour of a roomier, more dance floor minded version with beautifully manicured drums and a warm, emotive groove to carry the journey. The melodic elements sound incredible, lying a little less on the surface and ultimately coming to full fruition during a spine-tingling break. Sensational stuff from Dmitry who gets his Maudlin alias off to a great start, and caps off another sensational offering of emotional organic house from -102C. Don’t miss it.
