New Beginnings by Michigan Tech Jazz
This album was recorded Spring of 2021, before the Covid Vaccine was widely available. Our students did a fantastic job of rising above the challenges of distanced learning, and in-person rehearsals spread out further than is musically comfortable. We recorded this album because we wanted to time-stamp the amazing feeling of being back in person playing music together again. This album represents MTU Jazz in it's current form, featuring two big bands, a new orleans-style brass band, the JAZTEC combo, and a special piece by Director Adam Meckler's quintet. The album features Todd Clouser's A Love Electric, Patrick Booth, and vocalist Jana Nyberg.

MTU Jazz started under Don Keranen, continued under Mike Irish, and is now run by trumpeter and composer Adam Meckler. Meckler's program builds on the legacy of the aforementioned Tech Jazz Leaders, adding a New Orleans-Style Brass Band, among other groups. Jazz has been an integral part of the culture at Michigan Tech since the 1960s.
